I look to the natural world of plants, trees, and bodies of water for moments of peace and cosmic connection. Traveling to Florida for the first time this year, I reference imagery of beach culture, swimsuits and palmetto plants, that appear in the native surroundings. These elements synthesize with teachings from my childhood involvement with the Catholic Church, prayer cards, catholic imagery and iconography. This invented mythology shows a mermaid who is the Virgin Mary, women in bikinis beholding a golden aura of a saint, a speedo wearing man with a halo and golden face while casually proclaiming a political revolution. Palmetto plants become figurative and dance along the beach, beaming sunshine, celebrating human existence and the ability to behold the imperfect divine of the here and now, through nature and nurture within a tropical Eden. These paintings speak of earthly transcendent spaces and experiences that heal and regenerate my being while celebrating the joy of momentary existence.
